Vista del Lago’s wrestling team opened 2011 with a sweep of Cosumnes Oaks in Sierra Valley Conference play on Jan. 5. The varsity team won 46-24, while the junior varsity boys rolled up a 51-6 advantage. At the varsity level, Vista won six straight matches by pin, starting at 135 pounds by Trevor Grossi and continuing with falls by Jaleon Reid (140), Chris Chovanec (145), Jacob Sahagun (152), Jordan Bailey (160) and David Rossi (171). The most impressive win, however, came from Daniel Rodriguez at 125 pounds, as he earned a major-decision 14-2 victory over the eighth-ranked wrestler in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Austin Rompel won by forfeit at 103, while Austin Burke (112), Evan Shelley (119), Troy Grossi (130), Baraa Uyoun (189) and Brandon Kim (Hwt.) lost matches. “I thought we wrestled great at every weight,” Vista coach Frank Richmond said. “The matches we were underdogs in we lost close, and the matches where we were favored we got the falls. Daniel Rodriguez had the best performance of the night with his convincing victory over number-eight ranked Miller, 14-2. “
