Eagles fall to Liberty Ranch, beat Rosemont; showdown with Cosumnes Oaks looms Friday

A 5-4 loss to Liberty Ranch on Monday dropped Vista del Lago’s varsity softball team out of first place in the Sierra Valley Conference. The Eagles led 1-0 and then 3-2, but Liberty Ranch scored three big runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. The Eagles scored once in the top of the seventh, but that’s all they could muster and the suffered their first league loss of the season. Liberty Ranch currently sits on top of the league with a 4-1 record. Olivia Brown had a decent line, allowing only four hits and striking out 11, but walked three and three Vista errors led to a pair of unearned runs. Ashley Muzzi and Kellie Oosterman each had a pair of hits for the Eagles, Muzzi tripling and driving in a run. Tayana Mata knocked in two of Vista’s runs, while Jessica Evans had the other RBI. In non-league action on Tuesday, the Eagles blasted Rosemont with 14 hits in a 7-4 victory. Eight batters had hits for the Eagles, including three by Catherine Guidry and two apiece from Amanda Machado, Morgan Theis, Christina Guidry and Evans. Christina Guidry and Evans each drove in a pair of runs, while Machado had one RBI. Theis also scored twice in the win. Brown cruised into the sixth inning before running into trouble and was replaced by Evans. Brown allowed three runs on four hits and walked five to go with six strikeouts. Evans allowed a run on two hits and two walks and struck out two. The Eagles have a big game at home Friday when they host Cosumnes Oaks. Both teams have 3-1 records in the Sierra Valley Conference with the Eagles previously thrashing the Wolfpack 13-3 on March 21.
