Madeleine Ankhelyi earned a Sub-Section cross country individual championship and the Vista del Lago varsity girls’ won a team title, while the varsity boys’ placed fifth on Saturday at Angels Camp. Both teams will compete in Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Championship meet at Willow Hills in Folsom for a chance to earn a berth to the state meet in Fresno on Nov. 27. “This meet is basically a qualifier for sections, so we’ve just got to do this again on Saturday,” Vista coach Mike Livingston said. “The varsity girls ran really well. Madeleine looks great and had the fourth-fastest time of the day in all the divisions. Marissa, in just her second race back, was our fifth girl so it’s nice to have her back.” Vista placed three girls in the top-10 to advance. Jennifer Morgan placed second nearly a minute behind her teammate, finishing in 19:50, while Alegra Mendez ran fourth in 19:52. Jennifer Arbaugh placed 12th in 20:53 and Marissa Mendez finished two spots behind and five seconds later. Elizabeth Anderson (20th, 21:10) and Hannah Osuna (52nd, 22:51) also ran for the Eagles. Matt Winkler led the varsity boys, as he placed ninth in 17:06. Zach Jaeger finished 16th in 17:31, six seconds in front of Riley Martin, who ran 19th. David Howell placed fourth in 17:52, while Ashis Thomas ran 96th in 20:12. Jordan Takeuchi also ran for the Eagles, placing 137th in 22:43. “The boys qualified fifth and that’s about where I thought they’d finish,” Livingston said. “Riley and Matt have a chance to move to the state meet but they’ll have to run a little faster on Saturday.”
