January’s California High School District 3 Rodeo was a cold one but the Thundering Threes cowboys and cowgirls bundled up and put on another exciting performance.

The horses were covered in blankets at night; the kids were dressed in coats, sweatshirts and gloves while they warmed up their horses to prevent injuries due to cold muscles. The parents, grandparents and friends sat by outdoor heaters in the grandstand to cheer on the competitors.

The snack bar sold plenty of coffee and hot chocolate along with all the other great meals they cook up.

The competition also started later. The ground was frozen and needed extra work with the tractors to create a safer surface.

In spite of it, the kids had a great time competing, as well as chatting when they weren’t a part of the action. Because of the distances some travel to get to Lincoln, they only see each other at the rodeos. They use the time together to catch up, practice roping and having fun together.

District 3 returns to the Lincoln Arena March 16-17 for more rodeo action. Admission is free, so come on out and support your favorite rider, roper and ‘restler.
