A cyclist lost his life last week after a fatal collision on a Regional Transit light rail in Folsom.

According to Sacramento County Coroner’s records, Michael Higgins, 48, of Folsom, was killed in the accidental death at approximately 3:48 p.m., Wednesday, April 10.

Higgins was crossing against the arms at the light rail track at Folsom Boulevard and Parkshore Drive, which resulted in the fatality, said Jason Browning, Folsom Police Department.

“This is a tragic reminder to be diligent about safety near the light rail tracks and to follow the laws related to cycling on roadways,” Browning said. “In this case, the cyclist was riding on the wrong side of the road towards the tracks. Cyclists are required to travel on the same side of the street, and in the same direction as motor vehicles. The safety lights, bells, signage, and crossing arms were all in good working order. The saddest element of this collision is that it was preventable.”

The incident is being further investigated by RT Police because the cyclist was on the tracks.
