Clare Carroll placed 27th at the Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals on Saturday in San Diego, finishing the 5-kilometer race featuring the top runners in the nation in 18 minutes, 18 seconds. In only her fifth race of the season, the Vista del Lago sophomore posted a good time, despite finishing near the back of the field. “Twenty-seventh is not what I was shooting for, but I’m happy with my time,” Carroll said. “I really didn’t know what to expect or how I’d do, but at least I ran faster than last year.” Carroll had a different strategy from last year’s race, when she placed 30th in 18:32. “I ran a slow first mile and was in the very back of the pack, but over the next mile or two I passed as many runners as I could. Last year I went out too fast and just died and that’s a helpless feeling when runners are just passing you and you can’t run any faster. I like my strategy this year better.” Carroll said she will now begin preparing for the track and field season.
