Bust that mutton

Folsom Pro Rodeo

The popular mutton busting competition returns to the 49th Folsom Pro Rodeo. In front of cheering rodeo fans, the tots get a chance to tangle with a woolly beast (or rather, a sheep). The 5- and 6-year-olds compete nightly July 2, 3 and 4. “It’s a few seconds of sheer childhood glee, apprehension and exhilaration that ultimately end with a mouth full of dirt as 5- and 6-year-old children take their moment in the spotlight,” according to a press release issued by event organizers. A dozen pre-registered young cowboys and cowgirls get decked out in their best western outfits, grab a helmet and a fistful of wool and attempt to ride a full-grown sheep, according to organizers. Most rides only last a few seconds. For more on the rodeo and mutton busting, visit folsomprorodeo.com or call the Folsom Chamber of Commerce at (916) 985-2698. ~ Staff report
