For the third consecutive year, Folsom High’s varsity wrestling team is the champions of the Delta River League. The Bulldogs swept the final dual match of the season, beating Florin, 72-9 and Sheldon, 54-18 on Wednesday to secure the title. As the final scores indicate, the matches weren’t that close, as the Bulldogs clearly are the top team in the league. Folsom High seniors Jake Whatley, Adam Lymath, Jordan Hart and Blade Strong were recognized for their contributions to the program at their final home dual match. All four wrestlers finished the night without a loss. After the first five matches against the Huskies, the Bulldogs held a slim 13-8 lead, but then won the next seven matches to secure the victory. Four freshmen, Connor Pollock (103), Andrew Mendiola (135), Isaias Diaz (140) and Alex Wood (171), all stepped up and won matches as the Bulldogs breezed to the win. Folsom’s large margin of victory came via the pin, as Pollock, Mendiola, Diaz, Dillon Fader, Lymath and Wood all won by fall. Hart won his match by technical fall, while Sam Morgan won by major decision and Whatley won by decision. Strong also picked up six points with a forfeit. Against Florin, Parker (119) and Austin Kelley (130) won their matches by fall, as the rest of Folsom’s points came by forfeits. Folsom’s junior varsity team also won its third straight league title with wins over Florin and Sheldon and finished league play with a 5-0 record. Folsom will represent the Delta River League on Feb. 7 at the Section Team Championships at Rosemont High. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
