Folsom High’s varsity boys’ basketball team improved to 5-0 in the Delta River League on Wednesday, following a 74-54 win at Florin. The Bulldogs maintain a one-game lead in the Delta River League, as Pleasant Grove defeated Sheldon, 65-59, and remain one game behind at 4-1. Sheldon dropped to two games out at 2-3, while Jesuit lost to Monterey Trail, 61-58, and is now 1-4 in league play. Folsom started off well against Florin, leading 19-12 after one quarter, but then struggled somewhat and only held a four-point lead at halftime, 35-31. “We went into a lull there for about six to eight minutes where Florin got back into the game,” Folsom coach Mike Wall said. “They’ve got good athletes and good team speed and their aggressiveness got them back into the game. “Then we came out in the third quarter, like we did to start the game, and carried that energy a bit longer and were able to get away from them.” Folsom outscored the Panthers 18-8 in the third quarter and led by 14 heading into the fourth quarter, 53-39, as they coasted to a 20-point win. Tony Johnson led the Bulldogs with 28 points, while Kori Babineaux added 14 and Patrick Akins chipped in 11. Scott Moore contributed nine points, while Tucker Horwath finished with eight. Folsom begins the second round of league play at home Friday against Sheldon, a team that’s won its last three games in Folsom’s gym. Game time is 7 p.m.
