After qualifying for the state meet in the 1,600-meter run two years in a row, Vista del Lago?s Madeleine Ankhelyi qualified in the 3,200 this year. The Vista del Lago junior won the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championship in the 3,200-meter run on Friday at Elk Grove High, finishing in 10 minutes, 40.54 seconds. ?I felt really good,? Ankhelyi said. ?The temperature was perfect and I wasn?t disappointed with my time, even though I definitely think I can go faster.? After winning back-to-back Masters titles in the 1,600, Ankhelyi decided to double her pleasure and run the 3,200 this year and became a three-time Masters champion. ?It was a hard decision,? she said. ?I decided after the league meet to run the 3,200. Both races have their perks, but one thing I like about the 3,200 is you go right to the finals so you don?t have to worry about the trials. I consider myself a miler, but this is the first year I?m doing the 3,200 so we will see. ?While my ultimate goal is to qualify for the state meet, my goal was to win Masters and it?s pretty awesome and cool to have won three Masters titles.? Ankhelyi?s goal for the state meet is to run a personal-best time. ?My best time is 10:34 so if I could run that and even break 10:30, I would be happy,? she said. Teammate Clare Carroll ran well and placed fourth in 11:11.18, missing out on the state meet by a distant 18 seconds. Meaghan Heffelfinger also placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 6 inches. She missed qualifying for the state meet by 5 inches. Ethan Pipion ran fifth in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 40.01, while Sierra Jaeger ran ninth in the 1,600 in 5:19.0. Marisa Leung competed in the pole vault but did not clear the bar.
