Madeleine Ankhelyi decided to focus on the 3,200-meter run this postseason and she couldn?t be happier with that decision. While qualifying for the state meet in the 1,600 the previous two years, Ankhelyi never made it out of the trials. In the 3,200, there are no trials so the Vista del Lago junior competed in the state finals Saturday night at Buchanan High School in Clovis and placed ninth, finishing with a respectable time of 10 minutes, 38.82 seconds. ?One of my goals was to place in the top-10 so I?m happy with my finish,? Ankhelyi said. ?I was hoping for a better time, but it was really windy.? Ankhelyi was hoping to break 10:30 and despite the wind was only eight seconds off. She placed safely in ninth, five seconds out of eighth place and two seconds in front of the tenth-place finisher. It was an impressive performance for someone who had only run in two 3,200s entering the state finals. ?I had only really raced in the 3,200 at Arcadia and at Masters,? Ankhelyi said. ?I was excited and ready to go right before the start. It?s the state meet so I knew it would probably be a fast race. My goal was to stay in the race and run with the pack. We ran a 5:10 first mile which was fast, but I felt comfortable.? While Ankhelyi considers herself more of a miler than a two-miler, she enjoyed her state meet experience. She plans to compete in the 1,600 in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in two weeks in North Carolina. ?After that I plan to take a couple weeks off and then start training for cross country,? Ankhelyi said. Vernon places 23rd in triple jump Folsom High senior Doug Vernon placed 23rd in the triple jump at the state track and field championships on Friday at Buchanan High School in Clovis. Vernon triple jumped 44 feet, 2 ½ inches in his first jump, which turned out to be his best attempt. His second jump was 44 feet followed by a final jump of 42 feet, 10 ½ inches.
