Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ track and field team placed third out of 20 teams at the Cal Invitational on Saturday, while the varsity boys’ and freshman-sophomore boys’ teams also turned in solid efforts. Madeleine Ankhelyi posted the 12th-fastest time run this season, nationally, in the 3,200, finishing in 10 minutes, 50 seconds. Other strong performances for the girls included Julia Hofmann’s 4-foot, 8-inch high jump and Meaghan Heffelfinger’s 116-0 discus throw. Among the top boys’ performers was Ethan Pipion, who long jumped 20-0 and also ran the 300 hurdles in 42.0. Chris Cooper posted the second-fastest time in Division IV this season in the 200 meters, finishing in 23.4 seconds. Pole vaulters Christian Peralta, Frank Garland and Will Dunn had good days; Peralta clearing 10-0, while Garland and Dunn got over 7-6. Kyle Chun broke five minutes in the mile, while the 4x400-meter relay teams all finished in the top-three places with Matt Raymond running a 50-second anchor leg for the boys. Vista opened the league season at home Wednesday against Galt and Liberty Ranch and had several top finishes, including winners Raymond (100), Jeff Reinking (800), Dustin Morgan (800, 1,600) and Maci Shill (400). Second-place finishers included Trevor Canova (100), Hofmann (high jump), Peralta (400) and Jessica Bastear (long jump). Dunn and Kyra Tung also ran well in the 200 meters, Dunn finishing in 25.4 and Tung in 27.81. Martin Garza also finished the 100 meters in 11.72, while Lucie Chevreuil ran well in the 800 and the 1,600. Vista competes against El Dorado and River City today before competing at Bella Vista on Saturday.
