Alvarez, Fiegener ready for nationals
By: Matt Long Telegraph Sports Editor
Nick Fiegener and Carlos Alvarez have already had excellent summers on the mat and hope to add to their trophy display at the Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Tournaments. The Folsom High wrestlers leave Thursday for Fargo, ND, where they will compete in the tournaments July 15-21. Fiegener, a junior and Alvarez, a sophomore, will be wrestling at 152 pounds and 100 pounds, respectively. A top-eight finish would earn them the title of All-American, something both wrestlers are aiming to become. Fiegener took it a step further and said he?d like to get a top-three finish. ?I?d like to be a national champion, but that might be fantasy land, so I?ll take a top-three finish,? Fiegener said. Alvarez added, ?My goal this summer is to be an All-American. As for next wrestling season, I hope all the work I?m doing now and all the experience I?m getting will help me during the high school season.? Both boys have put together a solid summer resume on the mats. Both have won three major wrestling tournaments, what Folsom High coach Mike Collier is calling a triple crown. Collier said no Folsom High wrestler had ever done that before. Alvarez won the freshman-sophomore state championship and then won two Greco-Roman California championships, one in the cadet division and another up a division in the junior class. Fiegener also won the freshman-sophomore state tournament in his weight class, as well as winning a gold medal in the Cadet freestyle and Greco-Roman state meet. More impressively, Fiegener also recently returned from Western Regionals and placed in three different tournaments, winning the Cadet Folkstyle title, taking second in freestyle and fifth in Greco-Roman. Both wrestlers have had at least 50 matches over the summer and the more matches, the better, according to Collier. ?My goal is to become a state champion,? Fiegener said. ?To do that I have to work hard. I worked just as hard last summer, but I?m having more success this summer.? Alvarez said he would like to qualify for the state tournament next season and feels the work he?s put in and the improvements he?s made this summer will help him achieve that goal. Both wrestlers are looking for assistance or sponsorship to help defray the costs of going to Nationals in Fargo, ND.
