Folsom cross country team is young but strong

-A +A

Folsom High’s cross country team is a young, but very strong group.

The top-five runners from last year’s section qualifying boys’ team have graduated: Wade and Drew Kiesow, Jason Rayburn, Jackson Meyers and Wyatt Vaccaro. Returning seniors Christian Crebar and Brennan Pelayo will battle for top-seven spots with a bevy of young talent, including sophomore Spencer Pickren, who finished second in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I sophomore race a year ago as a freshman.

Joining Pickren are juniors Bradley Jackson and Israel Alfaro, who posted personal-best times in 2017 of 17:38 and 17:53, respectively. Other top-seven candidates, according to Folsom coach Steve Kinoshita, include juniors Calvin Frink and Eric Anderson and freshmen Kevin LaSalle and Zach Graeber. Also in the mix are Sutter Holden, Tavo Amaya, Michael Welsh, Jackson Abello, and Matthew Poon.

On the varsity girls’ side, senior and Division I qualifier Mariam Samara returns after a great summer of training looking to improve her personal-best time of 19:45. Following Samara is fellow senior and section qualifier McKayla Hodson. Sophomore Tirza Cai, junior Kylie Crebar and freshman newcomer Sanya Gowda figure to contribute. Others in the mix include juniors Elyssa Igoe, Emily Bursee, Elizabeth O’Donnell, Rebecca Sutera, Skylar Wolf, and Marissa Ostiek.

At the freshman-sophomore level, sophomore Nic Sardo is expected to make a strong showing and to lead the team. Bradley Pickren, Andrew Callanan, Sebastian Leng and Kyle Gilbert figure to round out the top-five spots. Drake Hergenraeder, Eliot Lea, Eric Ostiek, Henry Mark, Ian Klagenberb, Lorenzo Ciubal, and William Abello will also be competing.

The freshman-sophomore girls’ team will all be newcomers including Akane Shimoyoshi, Ava Flannery, Julia Blount, Hailey Timm, and Courtlyn Wells.
