Vista cross country opens season at Oakmont Invite

Vista del Lago’s cross country team kicked off its season with top-six finishes at the Oakmont Invitational on Aug. 25 at Maidu Park in Roseville.

The varsity girls’ team had the best finish, as they placed second to St. Francis. Rachel Burgoyne and Natasha Evans led the way, placing eighth and ninth with times of 14 minutes, 47.49 seconds and 14:48.11, respectively. Maya Barragan ran 13th in 15:05.83, while Sophie Pelletier (15:16.03) and Abby Carter (15:39.86). rounded out the scoring runners.

Also running were Kendall O’Daniel (16:04), Kathleen Breeze (16:07), Courtney Aitken (16:20) and Sabrina Terando (17:52).

The varsity boys placed third overall, as Jonah Petersen led the way on the 4,000-meter course with a finishing time of 12:42.67. Ethan Karr (13:12.45) and Stephen Northouse (13:13.57) finished near each other in 19th and 21st place, respectively. James Junaidi (31st, 13:24.10) and Alcuin Mowrer (69th, 14:08.25) completed the varsity team’s top-five. Elliott Harrison (14:18), Michael Pecha (14:26), Dennis Xiao (14:30), Joshua Hunt (14:35) and Tanner Tran (15:11) also ran for the Eagles.

The Vista sophomore boys’ team took fourth overall. Charlie Becker-Ellison and Preston Breeze were the top finishers, as Becker-Ellison ran 14th in 13:41.15, while Breeze placed 17th in 13:48.90. Michael Dias finished 27th in 14:16.97, while Daniel Granger (39th, 14:39.37) and Hayden Wagg (46th, 14:49.95) completed the scoring.

Alec Evans (15:08), Connor Dubbels (16:30), Logan O’Daniel (16:38), and Bryce Caples (17:35) also ran for the Eagles.

Andrew Zimny placed second for the freshman boys’ team, which placed fifth overall. Zimny finished the race in 13:44.11. Silas Glynn posted a time of 14:15.87 to place eighth, and he was followed by Andrew Hull (37th, 15:48.91), Seth Mendoza (59th, 16:37.61) and Luke Oliver (96th, 18:11.50).

In the freshman-sophomore girls’ race, Catie Timm led the way with a time of 16:14.80 to place 16th. Cameron Bader placed 20th in 16:33.51 followed by Cali Reese (26th, 16:38.74), Lylah Book (48th, 17:22.29) and Nishtha Shah (88th, 18:52.52).

Isabella Verduzco (19:24), Angela Zhou (19:36), Samantha Timm (21:30) and Neeva Deacon (21:48) also ran on the team.

At the junior varsity level, Arabella Perez placed fourth overall in 17:28.58.

"I was really happy with the way the entire team performed, given where we are in the season,” Vista coach Robert Grove said. “I'm really excited to see what this team can do.”
