Impaired driver pursuit injures 3By: Rachel Zirin, Senior Reporter
The Folsom Police Department responded to a call about an impaired driver around 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, leaving the Folsom Premium Outlets. A chased ensued, and when it ended following a crash, three were injured.
The impaired driver, a pedestrian and another driver were transported to an area hospital following the collision, and Folsom Police Sergeant Andrew Bates said their conditions are unknown, but all are expected to live.
Bates said the report came in as a woman getting into her silver Honda Pilot to leave the Outlets’ parking lot before the police officer responding arrived.
“The officer located the vehicle while leaving the area and tried to stop the driver,” Bates said. “The driver did not stop and led officers on a pursuit to the area of Broadstone Parkway and Clarksville Road.”
At the intersection, Bates said the impaired driver struck a white Toyota Rav 4 with an adult woman occupant, and an adult male pedestrian nearby was struck with debris.
After being treated, the impaired driver, identified as 64-year-old Gwen Vonsegger of Rancho Murieta, was arrested for driving when privilege is suspended or revoked for DUI, driving under combined influence of alcohol and drugs resulting in injury, operating a vehicle not equipped with interlock with a restricted license, evading a police officer while driving in a reckless manner, and violation of probation.
Vonsegger’s bail is set at $160,000.
Bates said the police department is waiting on test results to see what had Vonsegger impaired.
“This case highlights the tragic consequences when someone chooses to drive while impaired,” Bates said.
