It’s July, it’s hot and to make summer complete in the Sacramento region, it’s fair time. The California State Fair is off and running at the Cal Expo State Fairgrounds in Sacramento.

Through July 30, fairgoers of all ages can enjoy everything this golden state tradition has to offer. From the sights and sounds of the colorful midway and carnival rides to exhibits to educate you and just about everything California has to offer from small towns to the big city.

The fun doesn’t stop there; don’t miss out on the vast agriculture and livestock exhibits as well as an action packed line up of musical entertainment. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, don’t forget about the food. The California State Fair has everything desired by the avid foodie, from vegan to deep fried Twinkies; prepare to eat your heart out and be sure to pack the antacids in case you over indulge in temptation.

Just a few of top eats of choice are on the California State Fair menu this year, including the veggie hot dog on a stick. For years, vegans have missed out on the true corn dog experience during their visit to the fair and those days are now in the past with this healthy alternative to the fair time classic.

Traveling to the darker side of the healthy eats spectrum, the mac and cheese stuffed bacon burger has been added to the menu. Deep fried nachos can also be included in this category along with bacon wrapped corn on the cob, pork chop on a stick. We can’t leave out the popular Dole Whip, which name sounds like something really exotic when in reality it is a delicious soft serve ice cream treat combined with fruit juices.

In its 50th summer at Cal Expo, this year’s State Fair has many new attractions – among them, a gigantic dinosaur display that will make any youngster wide-eyed for days. The 17-day event celebrates our local diverse heritage to across the world, featuring demonstrations from as far as Japan and Ireland to right here at home.

When it comes to musical entertainment, the state fair shines once again with many big names. Tonight, Thursday, July 20, Good Charlotte takes to the Toyota Concert stage. Friday night step back a couple of decades to enjoy Sister Sledge. This Saturday, Smash Mouth rocks the stage and Sunday night is an evening for all baby boomers that want to “go back” a few years to watch Eddie Money walk on water.

Additional acts in the coming week include Blues Traveler, Anthem Lights, Trace Adkins, Belinda Carlisle, Melissa Etheridge and more. For a complete line up visit the California State Fair’s website.
