Aidan Gums is a master of disguise.
He spent the early part of 2014 donned in the telltale hues of a Del Oro High Golden Eagle, competing in Loomis against Roseville-area squads during the Sierra Foothill League freshmen baseball season.
This summer the Del Oro uniform stays in the closet.
Gums, a six-year Woodcreek Little Leaguer, is a proud member of the Woodcreek Senior all-stars. He played a role in Woodcreek’s 11-1 shellacking of Gold River in five innings Tuesday to claim the District 54 Little League title.
Gums said he enjoyed the challenge of facing his longtime Little League buddies during the prep season at Del Oro. He said he also gets along great with his current Woodcreek teammates, but it’s impossible to avoid a little ribbing when you play for the enemy.
“When I came back to Woodcreek, they challenged me, said they were going to beat (Del Oro) in baseball next year,” Aidan said Tuesday. “My (Del Oro teammates) used to give me smack at first too, but they are used to it now.”
Gums bats leadoff for the Woodcreek Seniors. He walked, hit, scored a run and tallied an RBI during the first win over Gold Rush and scored two runs in the second. Zach Horne was 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs in game No. 1 and scored with an RBI in the second.
Other two-game standouts included Spencer Cody (3 for 7, double, four RBIs, two runs), Jack Fitzpatrick (3 for 6, two runs, two RBIs), Nick Hendricks (1 for 4, double, run, two RBIs), Jeremy Heister (1 for 2, two runs), Justin Smith (1 for 3, two runs), Jack Frantz (1 for 2, two runs, RBI) and Jeremy McCullom (1 for 1, two runs).
Casey Fischbach and Horne combined for five innings with just three hits allowed and seven strikeouts in the first game. Fitzpatrick and Cody went five innings with three total hits allowed and seven strikeouts in the finale.
The Woodcreek Seniors are the first D54 team to advance to the Section 4 Championships. They have a long break until the action begins July 12, but will need plenty of preparation for a gauntlet of games that includes top-tier Sacramento and South Placer programs from District 5, 6, 7 and 11.
District 54 had only one other team (Gold River), but Woodcreek battered them 12-0 in five innings to open the short double-elimination bracket.
Section 4 teams won’t fall so easily.
“I know the next round will be much tougher,” Woodcreek coach Nick Hendricks said. “I think Rocklin will be the team to get through.”
