Martinoni accepts scholarship from Cal State BakersfieldBy: Matt Long, Sports Editor
Angelo Martinoni has had a standout wrestling career at Folsom High and capped it off last week by accepting a scholarship offer to wrestle at Cal State Bakersfield.
Martinoni is a two-time Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Champion, and three-time state qualifier. In his senior year, Martinoni placed fifth in the state at 126-pounds, capping off an outstanding season which included winning eight tournaments. Martinoni made it to the semifinals of every tournament he entered. He finished the season with a 57-6 record and led the Folsom team in wins.
“Cal State Bakersfield is getting a top-notch recruit in Angelo,” Folsom coach Mike Collier said. “Martinoni is coming off placing second at Flo Nationals, considered one of the most rugged tournaments in the country, where he defeated several state champions, All-Americans, and placewinners to advance to the finals.”
For Martinoni, the scholarship is a dream come true.
“I’m excited to go to a Division I school,” Martinoni said. “It’s definitely a great opportunity. They had offered me a partial scholarship earlier in the year, and after Flo Nationals, they upped it a lot. This has been a goal of mine ever since I started wrestling. I also want to be a national champion.”
Collier is proud of Martinoni’s accomplishments and scholarship offer.
“We have boards up on the walls in our wrestling room to recognize our top wrestler's accomplishments like Masters champions, state qualifiers, state placers and All-Americans, as well as an all-time team for Folsom High wrestling,” Collier said. “One of Angelo's goals was to be on everyone of those boards by the time he graduated and he was able to do that. He passed up Connor Pollock, who was sixth in the state in 2012 for us to become Folsom High's all-time best 126-pounder. We also have a special collage that goes up on the wall for those who place at nationals in their senior year and he is only the third wrestler to do that, joining Fiegener from 2014 and Jordan Hart from 2009.”
Martinoni is the fifth DI scholarship athlete to come out of Folsom High in the last five years, including state and national champion Nick Fiegener (2014), two-time state placer Curtis Booth (2016), third in the state Jason Bergquist (2016), and state finalist Lorenzo De La Riva (2015), who Martinoni will be joining at Bakersfield. De La Riva was a NCAA Division I National Qualifier as a redshirt freshman at Bakersfield.
