Falcon softball team loses a blowout and an extra-inning cliffhanger

-A +A

A rare Wednesday afternoon doubleheader started out rather poorly for the Falcons, and just when there was cause for optimism, the end result turned negative.

The Falcons opened with a lopsided, five-inning loss to Shasta, 15-2.  The lone highlight was Sara Thibaut’s second inning leadoff home run, a line drive to straightaway center field. The Knights hit Falcon starter Lauren Orris hard, then did the same to reliever Raven Lewis. The eight-run rule took effect after the Knights scored seven in the fifth inning and shut down the Falcons in the bottom half of the inning.

In game two, starting pitcher McKenna Rickles kept the Knights from having any big innings, but the Falcons still trailed 5-1 until the sixth when they put together a three-run rally to make it 5-4. Still down a run in the bottom half of the seventh, Sara Thibaut hit her second homer of the day – this one a liner to left field – that tied the score and sent the game into extra innings. Using the tie-breaker rule (each extra inning starts with a runner on second base), the Knights were able to put a run across in the top of the eighth while the Falcons could not advance theirs, resulting in a 6-5 Shasta win.

With just four games remaining on their schedule, the Falcons will face Modesto on Thursday at Falcon Diamond at 5 p.m.

Men’s golf

Another Big 8 tournament, another Falcon victory. The FLC men’s golf team continued their march toward a Big 8 Conference title on Wednesday with a five-stroke victory over runner-up Sierra at Woodbridge Country Club in Lodi.

With all six golfers shooting in the 70s, coach Barry Zarecky had the rare treat of throwing out a 78 as his high score (team scoring counts the five best scores). The Falcons were led by Max Menconi’s two-under-par 71, followed by Brandon Kelly’s even-par 73. The Falcons have just three Big 8 matches left, including next Wednesday’s tournament No. 12 at their home course, Rancho Murieta.
