With a 46-33 win over Rio Americano Tuesday, Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ basketball earned a piece of the Capital Athletic League championship.
When they later learned El Camino had upset Christian Brothers, the Eagles had the title all to themselves.
“We set lofty goals at the start of the season and we wanted to get better with each game, win the league and have a home playoff game and we’ve achieved all three of them,” Vista coach Marty Benjamin said. “I was surprised at how focused my team was last night and how seriously they took it. They were prepared and ready to play, and they stayed focused all game. They understood how important the game was. This team has a ton of heart and that’s the best thing a coach can hope for from his team.”
Vista outscored Rio Americano in every quarter on its way to a 13-point win. The team’s five seniors, playing in their final regular season home game, started both halves, as Tara Singh, Emily Anderson, Lindsee Zehe, Emilee Jones and Mikayla Totushek led the way. Anderson and Singh both scored 11 points.
The Eagles, 9-1 in league and 22-5 overall, will now wait to see where the Sac-Joaquin Section seeding committee places them in the Division III bracket. The team is ranked second in the power rankings on MaxPreps. Benjamin feels the team deserves a top-four seed. Brackets will be released Thursday.
