Oak Ridge’s wrestling team kick-started the postseason Saturday in a record-setting way at the Sierra Foothill League championships.

The Trojans had five champions and eight finalists in the tournament, as head coach Casey Rhyan said the team has never done better.

“I was happy with how we did,” Rhyan said. “We wrestled tough, and we’ve never had five champs and eight finalists before. Everyone wrestled well.”

Mikey Mello (138), Jackson Redhair (145), AJ Bicocca (197), Preston Cobabe (220) and Greg Masegian (285) each won their weight class, while Jared Horstman (132), Justin Hall (152) and Kaden West (182) placed second.

Max McCarver (113), Jack Santina (160) and Gabe Guzman (170) placed third, while CJ Berney (106) and Trevor Clonts (126) finished in fourth place.

The Trojans now advance to the Division I-AA section championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Folsom High. The top-eight finishers in each weight class will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships.

“Each week is like a new season,” Rhyan said.

Wrestling begins at 11 a.m. each day.
