Vista wrestling team starts season by winning own tournamentBy: Matt Long, Sports Editor
The wrestling season couldn’t have started off more impressively for Vista del Lago’s team.
The Eagles, hosting their own tournament on Saturday, outscored some of the top teams in the state to win the Vista Eagle Invitational over 29 other teams. Led by champions Ethan Cota (106), Liam Leckie (182) and Justin Ramos (285), Vista outscored state-ranked fifth Selma High, 12th-ranked Del Oro and two other highly-respected teams from Folsom and Benicia High. Selma placed second in the tournament, while Folsom was third and Del Oro placed fourth.
“Ethan had a great tourney with four falls, including in the finals where he gave up an early takedown,” Vista coach Frank Richmond said. “Ethan came into the tournament seeded second, and beat the California World Challenge Champion in the finals.
“Liam beat a returning Sac-Joaquin Section Masters qualifier from Bear River in the semis. He came in seeded third, and won all four of his matches by fall.
“Justin was seeded first, and won all five of his matches by fall and took home the Most Falls in the Least Time award.”
Andrew Reese also made the finals at 170 pounds and took second. Levi Burnett (132), Lucas Olives (138) and Alex Thornburg (160) earned fourth-place finishes, Erik Johnson placed fifth at 152, and Christian Soelzer (113), Weston Ward (138) and Austin Walker (195) each finished in sixth place in their weight classes.
