Folsom’s and Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ tennis teams met Wednesday for the Cross-town Cup Tennis Classic.
The contest featured two evenly-matched teams with Folsom High coming away with a 5-4 victory. In the final dual match of the season, the win improved Folsom’s record to 4-9, while Vista fell to 11-8.
Folsom won the match by dominating singles play, as they took No. 2 through No. 6 singles in straight sets. Melody Gao defeated Ashley Allen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Anna Hagiwara won her match at No. 3 over Jillian Baker, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Diya Nambiar got the best of Sydnee Tan, 6-4, 6-3. Soulana Glass won over Alex Elmhurst at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2, while Esha Thota earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Regan Martell.
Vista’s only win in singles came at the top of the ladder, as Sofia Smith outscored Annamaria Crone, 6-1, 7-5.
Vista swept doubles play. Sara Howlett and Taylor Escamilla defeated Faith Cyphert and Vivian Liu, 6-0, 6-2. Brooke Van Buskirk and Camila Wyatt fought hard to defeat Hiba Elkhatib 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Ellie Nguyen and Sophia Ammons beat Sureena Deol and Kanniker Hamilton, 5-7, 6-1 (10-4).
“What a great match,” Folsom coach Rick Klingensmith said. ‘It was a wonderful way to end our season. It was a lot of fun for both teams.”
