Placer 26, Bear River 14

The Hillmen overcame a 14-13 fourth-quarter deficit with two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game and overcame a tenacious Bruin defense in Lake of the Pines Friday.

Placer (8-0 overall, 3-0 Pioneer Valley League), is the lone undefeated team in the PVL standings, since Lincoln was upset by Foothill, 69-62.

Bear River (7-1, 2-1) is still in great position to reach the postseason, and played tough at home against a highly touted Placer squad.

Landen Clark had a huge tackle for loss and two of Bear River’s five sacks on Placer quarterback Marcus Ante, but the lanky defensive end couldn’t stop Placer from running 24 of the last 29 plays of the game.

Placer took back the lead with Owen Scott’s one-yard burst with 5 minutes, 42 seconds remaining, and then retook possession when Mikey Ferreira popped the ball loose on Dave Mastrella’s ensuing kickoff return (Ryan Huston recovered).

Placer tight end Derek Haney dashed to pay dirt on his first carry of the season with just 3:20 remaining and Placer closed the game by sacking Bear River quarterback Jason Voter twice (Diego Lopez and Logan Crawford).

Mastrella and Beau Baggett scored rushing touchdowns for Bear River. Jared Halbert (18 rushes, 156 yards) led the Placer rushing attack. Scott (16-74, two touchdowns) and Waylen Cozad (7-32) found the end zone. Cozad appeared to badly injure his knee on a six-yard touchdown run and didn’t return.

Placer junior varsity

Placer’s JV team scored with 46 seconds remaining and pulled in an interception on Bear River’s ensuing drive to beat the Bruins 25-22 in the early game.

Placer is 6-2 on the season, 3-0 in the PVL.

Colfax 42, Center 35

In Antelope, Lukas Rineer scored three Colfax touchdowns Friday night, the final one with 23 seconds to play on a one-yard run to help lift the Colfax Falcons past Center in a PVL football game.

Colfax, which trailed in the game 28-14 in the second quarter, also received 221 passing yards from Austin Weir and touchdown receptions from Matt Harshman and Nick Van Doorn.

Colfax is now 3-5 overall on the season and 1-2 in PVL games.

In the Junior Varsity, Colfax, playing without starting quarterback Ryland Heimann, suffered its first JV loss of the season, 42-21.

De La Salle 43, Del Oro 3

The Golden Eagles trailed 21-3 at the half and never closed the gap, falling 41-3 in Concord to one of the best prep football teams in the nation.

Del Oro (2-6 overall, 1-3 Sierra Foothill League) can still make the playoffs by beating Woodcreek and Granite Bay in consecutive games (if Granite Bay also loses to Rocklin), but the Golden Eagles have been outscored 124-27 the last four weeks, losing all four games.

Biggs 76, Foresthill 27

The Wildfires matched early scores by Biggs on Homecoming Night in the Northern Section, but couldn’t keep up the pace, falling well behind in the second half.
