Folsom, Grant renew rivalry on FridayBy: Matt Long, Sports Editor
Folsom has played Grant four times since 2010 and both teams have two wins.
Only De La Salle (three) and Grant (two) have beaten Folsom more than once in the last eight seasons. The other five losses have come to Pleasant Grove, Vacaville, Bellarmine, Sacramento, and St. Mary’s.
Ironically, Grant’s wins over the Bulldogs came in season-opening games in 2010 (49-14), which was broadcasted by ESPN, and 2011 (43-16). Folsom’s wins have come when the games mattered most, defeating the Pacers in the section title game in 2010 (41-20) and in the Division I Nor-Cal title game in 2014 (52-21).
Friday’s game at Grant is neither the opening game of the season, nor a playoff game, and it’s the first time the teams meet as league rivals. The Pacers enter the game at 2-2 in the Sierra Foothill League and 4-4 overall. Last week, they came within a play of upsetting Del Oro, before losing 22-21. Folsom is 4-0 in the SFL and 7-1 overall, and last week defeated Granite Bay, 63-7.
“Grant’s record might not be that great but pound-for-pound and man-for-man, they’re a really good team,” Folsom coach Kris Richardson said. “They have a proud program, and we’ve had a great history with them the few times we’ve played them. They look like they’re getting things rolling after the way they played Del Oro.”
