Folsom tennis pulls 5-4 upset over Granite Bay

Folsom High’s tennis team finishes the Sierra Foothill League regular season on the road Tuesday at Del Oro.

The Bulldogs, 5-6 in league play, are coming off an upset 5-4 victory over Granite Bay, which is their signature win of the season. When the teams met Sept. 19, Folsom lost 9-0.

Making the win nicer is that it came on Senior Day when the team recognized Hiba Elkhatib and Sayuri Alwis, the team’s two seniors.

Folsom and Granite Bay were tied 4-4 when the match was called for darkness on Thursday. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Ashley Booth and Faith Cyphert was tied at one set apiece heading into Friday’s finish. Booth and Cyphert won the first set, 7-5, but Granite Bay took the second 3-6. On Friday, Booth and Cyphert brought their A-game and won the match for themselves by winning the deciding set 6-3, and the won the match for the team, 5-4.

Folsom also won at No. 3 doubles, as Elkhatib and Sana Iqbal earned a 6-0, 6-2 win.

In singles action, Annamaria Crone won 7-6 (5), 6-4 at No. 1, while Melody Gao also had to work hard for a (7-6 (4), 7-5 win. Folsom’s other win came at No. 6 singles, as Esha Thota won her match 6-4, 6-4.
