Mariam Samara has been a strong runner for Folsom High for a few years now, but yet had her breakout race Saturday at the Clovis Invitational.

Samara, a senior, broke the 20-minute barrier for the first time, finishing the race in 19 minutes, 40.2 seconds to place 33rd overall.

“It was a breakout performance for Mariam,” Folsom coach Steve Kinoshita said. “It was her first sub-20-minute finish, which is an important step toward her goal of running at a Division I college. Her time is the 12th-fastest on that course on our school’s all-time list.”

Tirza Cai finished just over a minute after Mariam in 20:42.9 and was followed by McKayla Hodson (21:23.0), Sanya Gowda (21:23.5), Kylie Crebar (22:22.9) and Elyssa Igoe (23:42.9).

Spencer Pickren led the varsity boys, as he placed 25th in 16:22, the fourth-fastest time on the course by a Folsom High runner. Israel Alfaro also earned a top-100 finish, placing 95th in 17:08.2. Also running for the Bulldogs were Eric Anderson (17:14.1), Bradley Jackson (18:15.9), Calvin Frink (18:30.7) and Christian Crebar (19:05.5).
